METRO WING

• Metro wing is headed by a Chief Engineer with one Circle and five Divisions for development of the road infrastructure facilities for decongestion of traffic within the Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA).

• This wing was exclusively established to execute the projects for the improvement of transport network in and around Chennai City, as recommended in the Comprehensive Traffic and Transportation Study (CTTS) and the second master plan developed by Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) under the Chennai Metropolitan Development Plan (CMDP) Scheme.

• To enhance safe and sustainable urban transport system Grade-separators, High level bridges, Widening of roads/ bridges, Formation of new link roads, Bypasses, Foot Over Bridges (FOB) with Escalators, etc are being taken up.

• Construction/Widening of Road Over Bridges/Road under Bridges within the CMA, under Railway Works Programme (RWP) on cost sharing basis (50:50) are also taken up.

• Foot Over Bridge with escalator connecting the Tambaram Railway station & bus stand in GST Road completed and opened to public use on 26.04.2023.

• Road Over Bridge at LC 32 Perungalathur (Srinivasa Raghava Nagar Arm) completed and opened to traffic on 28.06.2023.

• High Level Bridge across Buckingham canal in Thiruvotriyur completed and opened to traffic on 07.09.2023.

• Road Over Bridge at LC 32 Perungalathur (Chennai - Chengalpattu Arm) completed and opened to traffic on 01.08.2024.

• High Level Bridge across Coovam river in Paruthipattu.

• Widening the East Coast Road to six lane at Palavakkam.

• Formation of Tambaram Eastern bypass from Km 5/450 – 8/080 at Nedungundram.

• Road Over Bridge at LC 32 Perungalathur (Tambaram Eastern Bypass Arm).

• Limited Use Subway at LC 27 Chrompet, Radha Nagar.

• Grade Separator on Mount-Poonamallee-Avadi road from MIOT Hospital to Mugalivakkam and Vehicular Under Pass at Madipakkam. These works funded by State Government are being executed by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) integrated with Metro Rail projects.

• Grade Separator at Madhya Kailash.

• Widening the East Coast Road to six lane at Kottivakkam.

Further, the following works have been commenced during the financial year 2023-24 and are in progress.

i) Widening the East Coast Road (ECR) to six lane in Neelangarai, Injambakkam and Sholinganallur villages.

ii) Formation of Tambaram Eastern bypass in Km 3/900 to 5/450 in Puthur village.

iii) Road Over Bridge at LC 16 near Minjur.

iv) Construction of Foot Over Bridge in Inner Ring Road at Senthil Nagar Junction.

v) Construction of Foot Over Bridge in Grand Western Trunk Road near Nelson Manickam Road Junction.

vi) Widening the existing ROB at Km 12/10 including widening of road from Km 12/2 – 13/3 of Inner Ring Road (Dual Five Lane).

vii) Limited Use Subway at LC 6 - Wimco Nagar

viii) Balance work in Road Over Bridge (ROB) at LC 14 – Veppampattu.

Further, for the work of “Construction of High Level Bridge across Coovam river in Padikuppam”, the Administrative Sanction proposal is under scrutiny at the Government.

III WORKS IN DPR STAGE

The preparation of the Detailed Project Reports (DPR) for the following works is in progress:

• Grade Separator at Kattupakkam (a portion of the work is being executed by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) integrated with Metro Rail projects)

• Grade Separator near Kaiveli, Madipakkam.

• Grade Separator at Avadi.

• Grade Separator near Ambattur Estate Bus Depot.

• Grade Separator at Korattur.

• Grade Separator at Kundrathur

• Grade Separator at Vanagaram.

• High Level Bridge across Rajakizhpakkam lake near Selaiyur.

• Foot Over Bridge in Thirumangalam - Mogappair road near DAV and Velammal School.

V. WORKS UNDER RAILWAY WORKS PROGRAMME (RWP)

• Two Road Under Bridges (RUBs) viz., a) LC 22 - Tirusulam and b) LC 4 – Thiruvotriyur will be taken up for construction after completion of Railway portion by Railways.

• Two Road Over Bridge works viz., a) Widening of the existing Road Over Bridge at Avadi and b) Construction of the Road Over Bridge at Km 75/6 of Chennai-Thiruttani-Renigunta road will be taken up for construction after completion of Railway portion by Railways. Now, Land Acquisition is in process for these works.
